Frequently asked questions
How do you count from 1 to 10 in Hindi?
एक (ek), दो (do), तीन (teen), चार (chaar), पाँच (paanch), छह (chhah), सात (saat), आठ (aath), नौ (nau), दस (das).
Why are Hindi numbers hard to learn?
Unlike English, the numbers from 11 to 99 don't follow a fully regular pattern, so each one is learned separately. Numbers ending in 9 are formed from the next ten with the prefix “un-” (one less): उनतीस (29) is “one less than thirty”.
How do you write 0 to 9 in Devanagari digits?
० १ २ ३ ४ ५ ६ ७ ८ ९. In everyday modern Hindi, the international digits 0–9 are used far more often, but Devanagari digits still appear in formal documents, books and signs.
What are lakh and crore?
Indian English and Hindi group large numbers differently: 1 lakh (लाख) = 100,000 and 1 crore (करोड़) = 10,000,000 (100 lakh). Ten million is written 1,00,00,000 in the Indian system.
